Swansboro Soccer Association

Recreation Program Overview

Recreation is the foundation of youth soccer in our state. At SSA we strive to have every player, parent, and coach participate in creating a positive environment. Recreation soccer is a major role in developing the next generation of players, coaches, and leaders  in our association and the state.

NC Youth Soccer Association (NCYSA) defines a recreation team as one: that does not use tryouts, invitations, recruiting or any like process to roster players selectively to any team on the basis of talent or ability. The system utilized for rostering the players must be a fair and balanced distribution of playing talent among all teams participating. NCYSA strives to promote an emphasis on PARTICIPATION, not COMPETITION. Help children understand this is the “Game for All Kids.”

What is Recreation Soccer?

Recreational soccer: Is that soccer program that is primarily devoted to the enjoyment and development of soccer players without the emphasis on travel or high level competition. The purpose of recreational soccer is to provide an opportunity for the participants to have fun, learn the sport and develop life skills including a life-long love of the game.

Eastern Carolina Soccer Association (ECSA)

Eastern Carolina Soccer Association was founded in 1995 for the purpose of scheduling recreation travel soccer within the area. ECSA has it's own Board of Directors and staff that determine the levels of play, rules and regulations, and scheduling for all clubs/teams that participate. Eastern Carolina Soccer Association (ECSA) is the scheduling league for affiliated soccer associations within the area that plays recreational soccer (U9 –U19) at the youth level.

SSA enters U9 - U19 teams into the ECSA pool of teams.

There are generally around 8 games per season, 4 home games and 4 away games. All SSA home matches are played at the SSA complex. Games will be played on Saturday, Sunday, or both days. At the end of the season there is a tournament for each division. All teams will participate in this single elimination tournament.

Recreational Soccer Spring 2025

This season Swansboro Soccer Association (SSA) is combining the registration for Micros and Rec Soccer. The divisions range from U4 (2022) - U19 (2006). Where your child falls in these divisions will depend on the player's BIRTH YEAR, NOT their age or school grade. The Spring Soccer Season will run from Mid / Late February - Early / Mid May.

As an all-volunteer soccer association, SSA seeks volunteers (concessions, coaches, field maintenance, etc.). If you volunteer with SSA, the club will contact you regarding volunteer positions or you may contact us directly if interested in assisting. You may contact SSA at [email protected].

PLEASE REGISTER YOUR CHILD USING THE NAME ON THEIR BIRTH CERTIFICATE

Divisions U4-U8 will be considered Micros Recreational Soccer - The goal of the Micros program is to get the players to have fun and be active in an organized and safe environment. In these birth years (2022 - 2017), we introduce the basic concepts of soccer and cultivate a love of the sport while developing fundamentals along the way. TOP Soccer and Academy programs will be found in a separate registration.

Divisions U4 -U8 will have one to two practices a week with games on Friday evenings, Saturday mornings and/or some Sunday afternoons. The total amount of games to be played each season will depend on number of teams in each division. It will all take place at the SSA Complex located at 1202 Hammocks Beach Road in Swansboro (some teams may have practices at the Town Park or Saint Mildred’s Church due limited availability of fields at the complex). The registration fee for Micros divisions U4-U8 includes the price of your child's youth jersey. You DO NOT have to order a jersey for these divisions.

Divisions U9-U19 will play under East Carolina Soccer Association (ECSA) Recreational Soccer. The goal of the ECSA Program (Ages U9 - U19) is to introduce children to developing physical and social skills through soccer. Players will be guided through various engaging, imaginative, and fun soccer-based activities by our volunteer staff.

Divisions U9-U19 will consist of two to three practices a week at the Town Park or Saint Mildred’s Church, Mon - Fri. Practice times typically start around 5pm but are determined by the volunteer coaches. Games are on Saturdays and/or Sundays. All games will be scheduled by ECSA, not SSA. Games will be scheduled for home and away fields. Travel could include Carteret, Craven, Onslow, and Duplin (Beulaville) counties.

Divisions U9-U19 - Please make sure to order a jersey ASAP using the following link: https://shuma.chipply.com/swansbororec/. It takes 4 -5 weeks from your order date to receive your jersey in the mail. If you have questions about your order, please reach out to Shuma directly at (770) 545-8337. Jersey numbers are given out by SSA at random as to not include duplicates on the same team or division. If you have a jersey from the fall or spring of 2024, or fall of 2023, you will not need to purchase a jersey if you have played in U9 or above in any of those seasons.

Teams will begin forming UPON REGISTRATION CLOSING. Once a team is finalized, your coach will notify you of practice dates, times, and locations.

If divisions are short numbers for players and/or teams, SSA will look to make the best decision to allow the majority of players to compete. This may include, but is not limited to, making teams co-ed teams or moving teams and/or players up one division.

Here is our Policy on Rostering Teams and Refunds

Code of Conduct for Parents/Caregivers, Families, and Friends:

• Be your child’s biggest fan and support him/her unconditionally.

• When you take your child home after a match or training session, please
be supportive and always focus on the positive aspects of his/her game.

• Develop a responsibility in your child to pack his/her own kit, clean
his/her cleats/uniform and take a bottle (full of water only) to all
practice and games.

• Respect the facilities at our opponents’ grounds.

• Do not criticize your child’s coach to your child or the other parents. If you
are not happy with the coach, you should raise issue with that coach.

• Encourage your child to speak with the coaches if your child is having
difficulties in training or games, or can’t attend training etc. This
“responsibility taking” is a big part of becoming a mature person. By
handling off the field tasks, your child is claiming ownership of all aspects
of the game.

• Help your child focus on the performance and not the result. Remember,
winning is not as important as the performance.

• Support all the players on your child’s team. Do not criticize anyone.
Children don’t mean to make mistakes.

• Do not criticize the opponents, their parents, or officials.

• Study the rules of the game. This will help you understand the calls made
during a match and the reason for them.

• Never audibly dispute a referee’s decision. They will make mistakes
occasionally. We all do. If you abuse or shout at the referee, you are
breaking the rules of the game and risk generating a possible fine. In
extreme circumstances we could even be expelled from the field(s), be
forced to play all our games away, or play without any spectators present.

• Parents/caregivers/friends of the family MUST NOT coach from the
touchline during matches or training. Leave this to the coaches or you may
cause confusion and erode your child’s confidence. The coaches have
worked out strategy for the players, and you might unwillingly be
obstructing a child’s performance.

• Parents/caregivers must not enter the field of play. Please remember – the
game is for the children. It is not for the glory of the coach, manager, or
parents.

• If your child is injured during a game or training session, do not come onto
the field until you are directed to do so by the referee or coach.
